Brad, married with 2 teenage children was an IT Manager for a large organization. He came to see me after he had lost his job due cutbacks at his company. He felt that he had been in a ‘career rut’ even though he was able to make some improvements to his working week (e.g. work nearer to home and manage his own diary) and the redundancy was an opportunity to change career.
Through several exploratory Career Coaching sessions, Brad and I conducted a thorough analysis of his skills, achievements and values and reviewed his career themes. After combining these insights with his personality profile, he realised that he wanted an outdoor job and become a Park Ranger.
I helped Brad research on how to become a Park Ranger. This involved talking to Park Rangers, finding possible employers and then reviewing relevant courses and recruitment methods for this career path. From the insights gleaned from this research Brad then wrote a new resume outlining the key skills from his previous roles that would be relevant for the new career.
Brad enrolled into a two-year university course and funded the study by reviewing the family budget, creating a new financial plan. He also researched some part time and project job opportunities using his IT skills. Brad found that all these change in his life also helped him improve his relationships with his children. He now has a long-term career vision that marries with his true passions.
