John came to see me to get help to write a resume that he needed for a role that he had been given a verbal offer. He had taken a break from his job search and seemed unexcited by the prospected of the new role.
After the first session John realised that he did not know how to describe what value he would offer to the new organisation. He also was questioning whether this role was the right one for him and he was not sure what he wanted for his long - term career. He was just cruising along!
I conducted some coaching sessions around John’s personal style, interests, values and key skills. We explored the key themes developed from our discussions, which John used to write a new resume. This exploration also helped him decide whether the new role was right for him as well as bringing together his thoughts on his long-term career direction. John created a list of questions he needed to answer before taking the new role. He then set out to find the answers by networking in his chosen industry and meeting with his new manager.
John realised that he had been complacent about his next job move and the networking and interviews were very useful in helping him make the decision to accept the role as well as prepare him for the integration into the new job and organisation. He went into the role with a plan for the first 90 days and with a different attitude too.
